Tasting- Cavit Alta Luna Pinot Noir 2011

Winery Review: On the nose cherry, plum and berry aromas mingle with notes of spice and tobacco. On the palate soft, supple tannins and refreshing acidity are beautifully balanced by ripe cherry fruit flavors on the finish which is dry, harmonious and elegant.


My Review: This wine had a dark fruit smell with hints of cherry and blackberry. There was also a smokey smell to it as well. The cherry taste continued when I tasted the wine. It had a good balance of flavors, of fruit, pepper and and a bit of an earthy flavor as well.

"Golden straw color. Bright, attractive, tropical aromas of creme brulee and fruit tart with a silky, bright, dry-yet-fruity light-to-medium body and a smooth, intriguing, snappy lime and apple finish with crunchy, fruit tannins and light oak. A super smooth and pure white sipper. 

My Review: This wine had a pear and apple aroma to it. On the palate, it was a little too tart for my liking. I did pick up on the little oak that it had as well. It also had a lingering aftertaste the I did not care for.

Winery Review: A Venetian favorite!  It is crisp and dry, rich and spicy with hints of peach and honey…perfect with salads, pasta, chicken and fish!  Musaragno is an organic wine estate near Venice, Italy.
 

My Review: On the nose, it had a sweet fruity smell. It had a citrus and apple taste to it. It was a very palatable wine, easy to drink. Not overly sweet and did not have an after taste.

Tasting- Fetzer Gewurztraminer 2014

Winery Review: A rainy minerality on the nose of this sweet wine manages to cut through the sugared oranges, honeysuckle and ripe, tropical white fleshed fruit, from peach to cherimoya. The palate is full of honeyed apples, white peach and pineapple, but the decent acidity and chalky element stops it short of treacly.

My Review: This wine had a sweet nose to it. It smelled like honey, and citrus fruit. On the palate, it was very sweet, almost candy like. I got a peachy taste, it also had a slight acid taste to it.

Winery Review: "The 2015 Maipe Malbec is another 100% Malbec, with a deep purple color and a style similar to the Lexicon, with chocolaty, blackcurrant and blackberry fruit, as well as touches of licorice and earth. It is delicious, soft and round."

My Review: This wine had a dark chocolate scent to it. After taking a sip, I got a blackberry fruit flavor. It also had an earthy, dirty, and woody taste to it mid palate. Overall, not too bad but probably would not drink it again.

Winery Review: A pretty, floral wine, with a rose petal note underscoring the rich pomegranate and sweet plum flavors. The fresh acidity is balanced, and a light spice note lingers on the finish.

My Review: I absolutely hated this wine. It had a very overpowering taste to it. Very spicy, which is a big turn off for me in wines. It also had a dark berry flavor to it.

Winery Review: The cherry color reveals a slightly fizzy wine that is a very fruitful rosĂ© made from the traditional vinho verde white grapes. Adding a splash of red to offer flavors with notes of strawberry, cherry and berries. A delightful twist on the original

My Review: This wine was very fruity on the nose. It was quite bubbly, tasting like grapefruit. I picked up some cherry flavor to it as well.

Tasting- Mars & Venus Chardonnay 2014

Winery Review:A very nice value Chardonnay that comfortably over-delivers vs. its modest price tag. No oak here, just bushels of clean, crisp, Chardonnay apple and stone fruit with a hint of caramelized pineapple.  Juicy and clean, this is a mid-weight white that's just perfect for parties or weeknight sipping.

My Review: I picked up a honey and apple scent on this wine. It wasn't that powerful of a taste, it had a slight buttery taste. I think this wine was fairly balanced as well. Pretty good taste for the its price.

Winery Visit- Bellevue Estate

On March 27th, my friends and I went to Bellevue Estate winery. I have been there a couple times before and have very much enjoyed each visit. This was the first time I actually talked to someone to learn more about their process of collecting, bottling and making their wine. During our visit they had an Easter buffet, that my friends and I ate. The food was very delicious and paired well with the wines we drank.

I especially love the ambiance Bellevue has. I have been to a good number of wineries back home in Northern Virginia, but this winery definitely has the best atmosphere. Not only, is Bellevue a winery, it is also a Bed and Breakfast and Wedding venue. The first thing you notice pulling into the winery is the a lovely lake. When you pull into the parking lot, you are met with a sea of grape vines. The tasting room is small, but has a very nice decor. The best part visually about Bellevue is the breathtaking view on the hilltop. There is a gazebo on the hilltop that is a great place to sit and drink wine in any type of weather.

Bellevue winery opened in May of 2012, and is located on the edge of Blacksburg, Virginia. The entire estate is 165 acres, and it has 12 acres of grape vines. They currently sell 20 wines, with an even split of 10 red wines and 10 white wines. The winery has a variety of planted grapes including niagara-utis labrossa, pinot grigio, chardonelle, riesling, traminitte, and vidal blanc for white and for reds, tempranillo, syrah, merlot, concord, pinot nior, cabernot franc, and cabernet sauvignon.  All of the grapes are grown on site, with the exception of the Zinfandel, where they are imported from California, because of the required air quality to get the spiciness out of the grape. The wines are oaked in both French and American Oak. The French oak gives the wines a nice buttery flavor, whereas the American Oak gives the wine a smokey flavor. Bellevue has won several awards for their wines including awards from Wines of the South, Dixie Classic Fair and the Taster's Guild.

The wines are trimmed eight per stock. Once a week during the summer, the wines are sprayed with an alcohol based spray to keep the nutrients within the grapes. The vines are trained to grow up and out by being attached to a plastic which helps the vines not break. The grapes are harvested in October and bottled on site. The entire process from harvest to bottle takes a few months.

During my visit I tried three wines which were the Millennium, Trailblazer, and. The first two of the wines were Merlot based. With my wines, I also had an Easter buffet which including chicken, green beans, and white rice. The wines paired really well with the food. 
  • 2013 Millennium: Merlot Reserve, Smooth & Smoky, with notes of figs, plums, raisins, and cloves
    • I thought this wine was very smokey. It smelled like tobacco. On the nose, you get plum and dark cherry. The wine had a nice even finish, it was less full bodied than I anticipated. 
  • 2014 Trailblazer: Merlot, Black cherry, plums with a light smokey finish, 
    • I thought this wine was similar to the millennium, but it was more earthy than smokey. On the palate, it was tart and jammy. I also got a flavor of cranberry and black currant. 
  • 2012 Kaleidoscope: Dry Pinot Grigio, hints of melon with a white pepper finish 
    • On the nose, I received a fruity smell to it. It had a cantaloupe flavor. I did pick up on the pepper flavor that the description mentioned. Overall, it was a solid dry and light white wine.

I had another great experience at Bellevue. I plan on going back before the end of the semester. They have pretty good local wine and a lovely ambiance. Another thing I love about this winery is their "unofficial" mascot of the winery, their dog, Duchess. She is very friendly around all of the visitors at the winery and another great addition to the experience of the winery.

Tasting- Beringer Chenin Blanc 2014

Winery Review: A fresh green-apple aroma and vivid citrus and crisp apple flavors are supported by vibrant acidity in this medium-bodied wine. The texture is smooth but crisp, making lots of good food pairings come to mind, from pre-meal cheese, to salads, seafood and veggie pastas.

My Review: Previously, I have enjoyed Chenin Blanc very much. Unfortunately, I did not enjoy this one too much. On the nose, it had a granny smith apple, and flowery scent to it. The initial taste is sweet, but it had an acidic pop to it mid-palate. It was a little too acidic for my liking.

Tasting- Carraia Aglianico

Winery Review: Produced in the Campania region of Italy, this Aglianico has delicious black fruit flavors with hints of licorice, volcanic soil and tar notes. Classic in nature, yet in a lighter, more crowd-pleasing style, the Carraia is made of the ancient Aglianico grape. This black grape originated in Greece and today is widely grown in Basilicata and Campania.

My Review: This wine had a dirty, earthy smell to it. After tasting it, I got flavors of blackberry, and firewood. It was a little to dark and full bodied for my liking.

Tasting- Siema Vino Rosso

Winery Review: Intense ruby red with soft garnet nuances in the glass, the Rosso is intriguingly fresh, fruity and spicy on the nose. Perfectly round and balanced, the wine is particularly soft and dry. Pair with simple dishes like fresh cheese, ham, salami, or pizza for a divine culinary experience.

My Review: This wine had a cherry, and rose petal smell to it. On the palate, it had a fruity, spicy, and slight oak taste to it, having hints of strawberries. It was well balanced, no one flavor overpowered the other. The finish to it was very pleasant. Overall, very nice wine.

Tasting- Dom de la Foret Grenache Cinsault Rose de Mediterranée

Winery Review: A stony, pure style, with a warm paving stone note framing the dried cherry and rose water notes. The long, watermelon rind—inflected finish is finely tuned. Shows length and cut, staying lacy in feel. 50% Cinsault and 50% Grenache.

My Review: I smelled vanilla, and peach on the nose. I got a tart taste to it when I first sipped it. It seemed similar to the first wine of this week. I liked this one a lot less compared to the other one.

Tasting- Bricco dei Tati Cortese 2013

Winery Review: Great Value! Treat this terrific little white like a red: Don’t chill it too much, then let it open for a half-hour to develop its enticing tropical fruit flavors. It’s dry, but the fruit gives an appealing illusion of sweetness. Great as an aperitif or with light seafood dishes.

My Review: On the nose, this wine had a distinct pineapple, and citrus. The taste had a lemonade like taste to it, with a sour finish. Overall, I thought it was a solid wine, would like to pair it with salmon or other fish dish.

Tasting- Crane Lake Riesling 2013

Winery Review: This light-colored wine displays aromas of honey suckle and orange blossom; flavors include green apple and peach.  The finish is mildly sweet, crisp, and lingering. This wine is an excellent aperitif, yet it pairs well with a number of different foods.  Try it with New England clam chowder, smoked salmon, Chinese chicken salad, roasted duck, or scallops in a cream sauce

My Review: I have enjoyed a lot of Riesling in the past, but this one was not up to par. You definitely got the sweet honey smell to it as well as peach. In its taste, it had a sweet flavor to it, but it also had an almost acidic disconnect to it mid-palate. Its finish was light, but left me wanting more.

Tasting- Crane Lake Shiraz 2013

Winery Review: Beautiful ruby appearance, with blackberry and pepper notes. Tannins and fruit marry well for a soft finish. This wine pairs well with sharp cheddar cheese and hazelnuts. Also try it along with roast lamb at Easter time, veal marsala, or grilled salmon.

My Review: Right away I got a peppery smell to it.  In the taste, I got some tobacco and oak. It was very earthy, and dry. Did not really enjoy this wine to much. I have not been a great fan of Shiraz in the past and this wine continued the trend.
